Event #3 Our feminism will be anti-racist or it will be meaningless!
It is not enough to be feminist. We have been conditioned into gender roles that present femininity as weak and we also perceive non-whiteness as inferior. Mainstream feminist movements of the past and present propagate a feminism that universalises women’s struggles and therefore marginalises the experiences of those of us who must fight against racism too. For women of colour, it is not just the binary of men-oppressors and women-victim but also the domination of whiteness. Liberation for women must mean decolonising our understandings of gender and oppression. Womanhood is defined by racist concepts. We need to confront feminism that fights for women’s rights but reproduces racist ideas. We have to recognise that women of colour, the same way women of different economic backgrounds, face different forms of exploitation and oppression. Even within the umbrella term ‘women of colour’, women of different ethnicities have wide ranging experiences. White supremacy puts white women as the ideal form of femininity. This has positioned white women at the vanguard of mainstream feminism. Our feminism should not just be inclusive. It needs to platform, appreciate and learn from the work of women of colour feminists. It needs to be active in collectivising and radicalising women of colour so that they are not tokenised. If women of colour are not liberated, then no one can be free.

The focus of these events is on women’s struggles and our campaigns for gender, racial and economic justice. If you want to get involved in organising for the women’s strike or want to start your own strike assembly at your workplace or in your community, get in touch or come along to one of these events. Childcare will be provided at all events and children are also welcome to attend events.
